Building A World That Never Was: How The Startup Garage Is Making A Mark In Engineering - Forbes

The University of Southern California’s Viterbi School of Engineering partnered with venture firm Kleiner Perkins and United Talent Agency to build the Startup Garage in 2013.

It’s likely that every single day you use something that was made by an engineer — whether that’s a free app or a freeway.

“Scientists study the world that is. Engineers create the world that never was,” said Yannis Yortsos, Dean of USC’s Viterbi School of Engineering, paraphrasing a famous quote by aerospace engineer Theodore von Karman.

It is with this idea in mind that Ashish Soni, Executive Director of Digital Innovation for USC’s Viterbi Student Innovation Institute, had the idea to start an accelerator geared specifically toward engineering.

“Engineers are builders, inventors, problem solvers and innovators. They are comfortable with experimentation and tinkering that is crucial in the early stage as a startup tries to get to product-market fit,” said Soni.
